Dennis “Strongman” Joseph

Long-time member, Dennis Joseph, has been consistently coming to the Firebase for the past three years. When he first arrived, you knew he was a strong guy, but definitely lacked stamina and mobility. Today, he has made vast improvements in both areas, while getting stronger than he was before. Dennis enjoys all the different class options the Firebase has to offer, and you can find him at the gym at all different times of the day. Always ready to lend a hand and greet new members, Dennis epitomizes what the Firebase is all about.

What is your sports or fitness background? What was your fitness routine like before joining the FireBase?

I grew up in Buffalo playing hockey. My routine prior to joining Firebase consisted of lifting weights and doing some cardio 3 to 4 times a week at LA Fitness, and supplemented with some occasional bike riding and roller-blading. Even though I could bench press a lot, I was still pretty much overweight and out of shape.

How long have you been a member at the FireBase? What prompted you to look into CrossFit and how did you end up at the FireBase?

I’ve been a member for 3 years now. I had seen the competition on TV and it looked like fun. A well-respected friend of mine who does CrossFit, but lives in a different part of Orlando, urged me to try Firebase instead of one closer to my house. He said I’d get better coaching and have a better experience, and although I didn’t understand at the time, it turned out he was right.

What have you noticed as the biggest difference in your fitness level since joining the FireBase?

The biggest difference is in my endurance level, but my strength has increased tremendously, I have better mobility, and I’m no longer fighting with pain in my rotor cuff.

What do you enjoy most about training at the FireBase?

I like the motivation I get to push myself at every work out. All I need to do is show up and I always seen to get a great workout.

What one movement in CrossFit do you think promotes the best results and why?

For me it is not any one movement. I think it is the wide variety of everything we do.

What one movement do you hate seeing on the whiteboard and why?

I have some limitations in my toes, so lunges are a problem for me. But I can always substitute something else.

What would you say to anyone thinking about trying CrossFit, but are afraid of doing it?

You work at your own pace by adjusting the weights to what you can do and you can go at your own speed. There are coaches who make sure you have proper form on the movements. And everyone will show you what to do and help you out.
